Properties of Addition and Multiplication

When teaching this unit both the teacher and the students should be familiar and comfortable with the properties of addition and multiplication.

Rules for Addition:

Commutative Property a + b = b + a

Associative Property (a + b) + c = a + (b +c)

Identity Property a + 0 = a

Additive Inverse Property a + (-a) = -a + a = 0

Rules for Multiplication:

Commutative Property a × b = b × a

Associative Property a × (b × c) = (a × b) × c

Identity Property a × 1 = a

Multiplicative Inverse Property a x 1/a = 1

Distributive Rule a(b + c) = ab +bc
