Math Talks

“This opened up mathematical pathways and allowed students who had not understood to both gain understanding and ask questions, adding to the understanding of the original student.”23 Math talks allow students to learn from each other. They must share their reasoning with one another in logical ways. By sharing their reasoning students can learn from one another and get the opportunity to ask each other questions. “Students love to give their different strategies and are usually completely engaged and fascinated by the different methods that emerge.”24 Not every student learns in the same way, by sharing their ideas and reasoning students can learn strategies from their peers. This will put my students in the “teacher” role as well. Math talks give students the opportunity to act as the math expert. This will help them to develop confidence in math and feel proud of their work.
