Teachers take the lead in developing and sustaining a Teachers Institute for their community.

About the National Initiative

The Yale National Initiative to strengthen teaching in public schools® promotes the establishment of Teachers Institutes in high-need school districts around the country. Following the approach developed in New Haven and implemented in other communities, the Initiative places emphasis on the fundamental necessity of effective teaching for student learning, the precept on which Teachers Institutes are founded. Each year, the Initiative brings K-12 public school teachers to Yale to participate in content-based, collegial seminars led by Yale faculty. The teachers who participate - named Yale National Fellows - develop a curriculum unit to teach their students in the coming year, and learn about the Teachers Institute Approach to professional development through school-university partnership.

Curriculum Units by Teachers

Each teacher participating as a National Fellow in an Initiative seminar with a Yale faculty member studies the seminar subject and prepares a curriculum unit to be taught during the following year. In this way teachers deepen their knowledge of the subjects they teach and develop new curricular material to engage and educate the students in their school courses. View the curriculum units by searching the topical index or the title of volumes of units published each year.
