Mary E. Miller Named Yale College Dean

Sterling Professor Mary E. Miller has been named the new dean of Yale College. "Mary has devoted her entire career to Yale and has been an exemplary academic citizen," said President Richard C. Levin. Miller, a specialist on Mesoamerican Art, was the popular Master of Saybrook College for nine years and was a member of the Study Group to Consider New Residential Colleges. She was Co-Chair of the University Advisory Council on the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, appointed by President Levin, from 2001 through 2008. She has led Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute seminars on "Understanding the Ancient Americas: Foundation, Flourishing, and Survival" (1994) and "Art and Identity in Mexico, from the Olmec to Modern Times" (1999), on which she led a national seminar in 2005. She has led a national seminar on "Native America: Understanding the Past through Things" (2006) and "Maps and Mapmaking" (2007). She served on the National Demonstration Project Planning Team and Implementation Team and was a member of the Team of New Haven Colleagues in the National Initiative. Her deanship began December 1, 2008.
