Lewis, John . Walking with the Wind. New Your: Simon and Schuster, 1998. Excerpts

from this book will be used to learn about the conditions in the 1950's and 1960's and the

responses to it. It will also be used to compare and contrast community involvement of

John Lewis and that of Barack Obama.

Obama, Barack. Dreams from My Father. New York: Crown Publishing Group, 1995.

Dreams from my Father contains details about Barack Obama's community organizing,

as well as a description of his life's experiences that led to the person he is today.

Excerpts from this book will be used to inspire students to become involved in their

communities and also to compare and contrast the Civil Rights Era and activism to today.

Obama, Barack. The Audacity of Hope. New York: Crown Publishing Group, 2006. This

book is great for conveying Barack Obama's optimism and call for a new kind of

politics. Excerpts from the chapters on "Our Constitution" and "Race" will be used as we
