Kluger, Richard. Simple Justice: The History of Brown v. Board of Education and Black America's Struggle for Equality. New York: Vintage, 2004. This was the text used in the Yale Civil Rights seminar and provided an in depth background of the cases, people, and events that led to the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education.
