Knapp, Bettina  L. Walt Whitman. New York , NY: The Continuum Publishing Company, 1993. This book chronicles Walt Whitman's life and works.

Paulin, Tom. The Faber book of political verse. London: Faber and Faber, 1989. This book is an anthology in which Paulin shows that political poetry is no different from poems on love, relationships, or nature. 

Rich, Adrienne. What is found there: notebooks on poetry and politics. New York: W.W. Norton, 2003. The author reflects through her work, journals, letters, memories and the work of many poets, on how poetry and politics enter and affect an American life.

Thurston, Michael. Making something happen: American political poetry between the world wars. Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 2001. The author discusses political poetry and examines four political poets - Edward Rolfe, Langston Hughes, Ezra Pound, and Muriel Rukeyser.

Heard, Georgia. Awakening the heart: exploring poetry in elementary and middle school. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, 1999. This book is an inspiring handbook showing teachers how poetry can transform students and improve their ability to read and write.

Heard, Georgia. Heart maps: helping students create and craft authentic writing. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, 2016. In this book, Heard uses heart maps for students to explore their feelings, passions, vulnerabilities and wonderings.  It is a great book to start teaching students how to communicate their thoughts and feelings.

Hermsen, Terry. Poetry of place: helping students write their worlds. Urbana, IL:

National Council of Teachers of English, 2009.

This book has great poetry writing activities that can be modified for students of  

all ages.  The author invites readers to modify as needed. 

Koch, Kenneth. Rose, where did you get that red: teaching great poetry to children. New York: Vintage Books, 1990. This book is a complete guide for teaching children poetry using poems from great poets.  The author shows how to teach students poetry ideas to write their own poems.

Koch, Kenneth. Wishes, lies and dreams: teaching children how to write poetry. New York, NY: Chelsea House Publishers, 1970. In this book, Koch describes his inventive methods for teaching children how to create poems with numerous examples.

Prelutsky, Jack, and Garth Williams. Ride a purple pelican. Boston: National Braille Press, 1987. A wonderful picture book of Prelutsky's poetry which includes poems about states and cities.
