Background

I currently teach at a public school in Chicago, Illinois. At Carter School of Excellence, our student population is predominantly African American at 99%. Over the past several months we have begun to receive an influx of migrant students who are Spanish speaking.  99.8% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Over 50% of my students have Individualized Education Plans (IEP). My classroom focuses on performing arts with an emphasis on Social Emotional Learning. I teach students from kindergarten through 8th grade, therefore my students have a vast range of learning styles, abilities and interests. Differentiation and scaffolding instruction are critical for the success of my diverse learners. This unit will be written for grades 3-8th but can be modified for other grade levels as well.
