Appendix on Implementing District Standards
Implementing Arizona State Standards: Reading Standards for Literature: Key Ideas and Detail
5.RL. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details of the text; include how charters in story or drama respond to challenges, how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic, and summary of the text.
5.RL.7 Analyze how visual, and multimedia elements contribute to the purpose, meaning, or tone of the text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth and poem.
5.RL.9 Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.
These reading standards will justify the skills being utilized in the project. A skill students have difficultly with is comprehending the comparing and contrasting of stories in the same genre. Students will compare and contrast their oral stories with other classmates. How their story is similar and how it is different. Also, students are creating visuals that they can show students how they depict the oral clan stories. Through their visual their classmates can analyze how the story has a character, setting and plot.
Writing Standard: Text Types and Purposes
5.W.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear sequences.
- Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.
- Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue and description, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations.
- Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events.
- Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
- Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.
5.W.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with other; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to complete a writing task.
5.W.7 Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic and to answer a specific question.
Students will create a narrative through graphic and will investigate through family interview to find out more about their clan origin. Technology is important way to collect and keep findings in one place. I believe these writing standards are important to completing the project.
Speaking and Listening Standards: Comprehension and Collaboration
5.SL.2 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
5.SL.3 Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
The speaking and listening standards is relevant, because students will present their finding to the class. Students will create a Power Point through google doc. This will help our students get experience in public speaking and build confidence in themselves.
Language Standards: Knowledge of Language
5.L.3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
- Expand, combine, and reduce sentences for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style.
- Compare and contrast and the varieties of English (e.g., dialects, registers) used in stories, dramas, or poems.
When students collect information, I expect them to work on getting the direct quote from their interviewee or if they record the interview; students need to look for quotes to put into their graphic narrative. Also, playing with words or phrases to place in graphic narrative. I would like for students to also have a discussion about the similarities and differences in each story being presented.
Art Standards: Visual
5.VA.2 Organize and Develop Artistic Idea
- Develop skills in multiple art-making techniques and experiment with approaches (e.g., using elements and principles of modern art, applying artistic norms of diverse cultures through practice.
- Demonstrate quality craftmanship through care and use of materials, tools and equipment.
- Describe and visually document places and /or objects of personal significance.
The art standard is vital for completing this project. I believe this is where we will take more time. Students will work on their craftmanship with creating shapes and transforming them into figures, landscapes and brilliance. I believe that all these standards will help support “Dine Alchini Ba’hani through Graphical Novel Storytelling” project.
