Appendix On Implementing District Standards
VA Science 5.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific and engineering practices.
This standard focuses on scientific investigation through experiments and observations. Throughout each activity of this unit students will be asked to make hypotheses, record findings, and draw conclusions from their observations or hands-on activities in their science journals which connect directly with this standard. A review of independent and dependent variables will be present in activity three as students investigate how different types of sugar (the independent variable) affect the rate of yeast fermentation (the dependent variable). Through this investigation, students will collect and analyze data to determine how changes in the independent variable influence the chemical reaction, and if their hypothesis made at the beginning was confirmed. In this activity students will also be measuring using elapsed time and collecting data from other groups which align with this standard as well.
VA Science 5.7 The student will investigate and understand that matter has properties and interactions.
This is the standard that is the main focus of this unit as students will investigate the properties and interactions of matter through a series of hands-on scientific investigations involving yeast, fermentation, gluten development, and mixtures. During activities two and three, students will review the concept of mixtures as they combine individual ingredients to make pizza dough, identifying how substances can be physically combined before undergoing chemical change. Students will also be exploring the physical properties of gluten by isolating and examining the gluten network in dough. These activities allow students to compare physical and chemical changes, analyze how matter interacts under different conditions, and use evidence to construct their scientific conclusions.
