Teaching Strategies

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a concrete experience that engages a learner’s senses to explore the world around them. It is also hands-on learning. Following the learning, the learner must reflect on and consider the learning that has occurred. Basically, this is when my students will be ‘doing what scientists do’. This teaching strategy will occur in all three activities in the unit.

Turn and Talk

This strategy is central to learning in the primary grades. Students need to be able to communicate together, either one-on-one or in a small group. Communication is also one of the core things that ‘scientists do’ that I would like my students to emulate. We will be using this strategy in each activity to share ideas predictions (hypotheses) about the forthcoming activity as well as to summarize our learning following the activity.

Journaling

My students will be working in a science journal to record their learning. Journaling in our class will include pictures with labels and some sentences (largely spelled phonetically). My students will conclude each activity with a journal page in an attempt to sum up their learning.
