Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Wo Ho Can Long). Directed by Ang Lee. 120 min. 2000 (USA) (subtitled) DVD. This film is very action packed. Because of some of the violence and it content this film will not be viewed in its entirety. But the landscape and cinema photography offers a wonderful treat for students.
Mulan Directed by & . 88 min. Buena Vista Pictures 1998 DVD. This Disney adaptation of the myth of Mulan .To save her father from death in the army, a Chinese maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroes in the process.
Not One Less (Yi Ge Dou Bu Neng Shao). Directed by . 106 min. 2000 (USA) (subtitled) DVD. The rural school setting and urban landscape will resonate for both students and teachers. This film has a slight reality TV show aura. I previewed it with my students and they loved it.
Red Firecracker ( DVD. This film will not be viewed in its entirety. Excerpts will be view to analyze Chinese film aesthetics along with gender and culture issues.
The King of Mask (Bian Lian). Directed by . 91 mins. (1999) (USA) (subtitled) — I will next use this film to further explore gender issues as well as Chinese performing art and culture.
