Interaction Energy

E ~ kT (k = 1.38 x 10 - 2 3 JK - 1)

Electrovolts (eV), where 1 eV = 1.60 x 10 - 1 9J

MeV = 10 6 eV

GeV = 10 9 eV

Calculate the interaction energy when the temperature is 10 1 4 K. Express your answer in Joules and GeV.

Solution:

E ~ kT = (1.38 x 10 - 2 3 JK - 1) (10 1 4 K) = 1.38 x 10 - 9J

in terms of GeV

(1.38 x 10 - 9J) / (1.60 x 10 - 1 9JeV - 1) = 8.63 x 10 9eV = 8.63 GeV
