Plato. The Republic: The Allegory of the Cave. Brea, CA: P & L Publication, 2010. Book VII.

This is a story written by the Greek philosopher Plato in 360 B.C. and found in his work, The Republic. It was written as dialogue that took place between Plato’s brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, who narrated the story. The story is about prisoners who were chained to a wall inside of a cave. As they involuntarily faced another wall, they watched shadows move along the wall that were caused by puppeteers moving. The shadows were the closest thing to freedom and reality they could get. The world is the cave and the realization of reality leads to freedom.
