Writing Ekphrastic Poetry
When students get to this point of the unit, they will have a good foundation established from the previous two sections on Looking at Art and Reading Ekphrastic Poetry. References can be made at any time to previous poems or works of art. In learning to write Ekphrastic poetry children will describe, imagine, and incorporate their thoughts about the artwork. They will give a voice to the main figure and the other figure(s). They will be encouraged to let the objects speak. They will be encouraged to let the artist speak. I will ask the students to question the artist, and the figure(s), and themselves. I will ask them to summarize their interactions with the art and its visitors. Lastly, I will encourage children to use their imagination and to use their own method for interacting with the picture or object.
