Introduction
Today, students are aware of the global threats to the environment – but their physical contact, their intimacy with nature is fading. A kid today can likely tell you about the Amazon rain forest – but not the last time he or she explored the woods in solitude or lay in a field listening to the wind and watching the clouds move.1 When this disconnect happens, it can become hard for them to value the natural world. The long-term effects are that young people lose the ability to focus on sustainability and do not care about the quality of the environment and how this impacts humans. The focus of this unit is for students to gain awareness of the increasing divide between them and the natural world, understand the concept of green spaces, exploring environmental issues of air and water pollution, and identify environmental justice and its movement.
