Appendix on Implementing District Standards
This unit addresses the following Common Core State Standards for 7th grade English Language Arts:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama.
Student will analyze the craft and structure of several texts throughout this unit, focusing on the meaning of the words an author uses. Students will learn how sound devices, including rhymes and repetition, can be used for emphasis.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.3.d
Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.
In this unit, students will learn how word choice is essential for conveying meaning and how strong verbs can create sensory language. They will read and analyze texts to imitate craft moves in their own writing.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.5
With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed.
Students will receive support with revision from their peers when they engage in the writing workshop model. They will also have opportunities to share their writing in collaborative structures.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.10
Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Routinely, through using a writer’s notebook and through practicing sentence imitation, students will practice writing for a variety of purposes and audiences.
