Appendix on Implementing District Standards
My district uses Common Core State Standards. I specifically use Common Core Standards that align with Third Grade English Language Arts. Those listed below come from subcategories:
Common Core Standards > Language Arts > 2010
L.3.1L Produce simple, compound, and complex sentences.
Students will write daily journal prompts with understanding. Students will be asked to write complete sentences in detail. Students will use these daily journal entries to assist with their final writing project.
L.3.5B Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe people who are friendly or helpful). Students will use background knowledge to make a connection between their lives and the information gained from the text and media for this assignment.
RF.3.4C Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding. Rereading as necessary
Students will use text and media for understanding and writing. If a student is having difficulty recalling details about the topic, they will be encouraged to go back and reread the text.
RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text. (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur)
Students will use information they receive from photographs and recordings to help show understanding in their writing and conversations about the topics.
SL.3.1C Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others.
Students will ask questions to gain an understanding of the topic. If they require assistance, they will be directed to reread the text or to ask a peer or teacher for help.
SL.3.1D Explain their ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss in both large and small group settings their ideas and discoveries about their topics.
W.3.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing.
Students will work on their writing skills for this unit. They will begin by journaling, then adding those journal entries together to complete their final writing project about their topic of choice.
