Dorn, Linda J, and Carla Sophos. 2003. Developing Independent Learners. Stenhouse Pub. (Resource on how to encourage students to become independent thinkers. This book will help to set up independent work for the workshopping model while writing.)
Gollub, Matthew. 2010. The Harlem Renaissance. (This story helps to introduce students to the Harlem Renaissance through pictures and text.)
Ruzzo, Karen, and Mary Anne Sacco. 2004. Significant Studies for Second Grade. Heinemann Educational Books. (This resource is a review of basic writing techniques. I found this resource helpful in understanding what some of the students’ writing challenges may be from the previous year.)
Smith, Sherri L., and Tim Foley. 2021. What Was the Harlem Renaissance? New York: Penguin Workshop. (This book lays out all of the important information from the Harlem Renaissance, including many key figures from the period.)
Toomer, Jean. 1988. The Collected Poems of Jean Toomer. UNC Press Books. (A look into Jean Toomer’s works.)
Turner, Barry. 2004. Writer’s Handbook Guide to Writing for Children. Pan Macmillan Adult. (Contains many good ideas on how to teach students how to navigate the writing process from start to finish.)
Young, Ross, and Felicity Ferguson. 2021. Real-World Writers: A Handbook for Teaching Writing with 7-11 Year Olds. Routledge. (I found this book to be the most helpful when finding information for this unit. It offers great insight into how to get your students to become better writers. There are many examples of writing workshop activities to help students along the way.)
Zora Neale Hurston. 2008. Zora Neale Hurston. Rutgers University Press. (This book offers several different written works by the author.)
