Tools for this Unit:

Appendix on Implementing District Standards.

Main standard: English Language Arts Standards » Writing » Grade 5 » 5

Substandards:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Students write from the perspective of Renaissance figures, blending historical accuracy with imaginative expression to craft first-person letters that reflect voice, experience, and historical context.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Students learn to plan and produce letters with a clear rhetorical purpose, focusing on ethos, pathos, and logos, while considering the expectations and values of a historical or imagined audience.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.5: with guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or typing a new approach.

The unit focuses on the importance of writing through multiple drafts, peer review, teacher conferencing, and self-reflection to develop clarity, voice, and tone over time.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

The students engage in sustained letter-writing steps over several lessons, using historical facts, rhetoric study, and iterative reflection, while also participating in shorter exercises to practice voice, vocabulary, and structure.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

Students apply their understanding of grammar, sentence structure, and formal conventions to produce historically inspired letters that reflect both accurate period language and thoughtful rhetorical choices.
