Classroom Activities

The first lesson will commence with a study of cartography and the many facets of map making from the early 16th century to the present (see Figure 3).  Using a PowerPoint, maps in books, and copies of maps, study will learn about cartography and the art of map making.  Students will make a copy of a heart map and a compass rose. Students will also study family tree maps and will develop interview questions to meet with parents, staff members, and community members to design family trees and write a summary of their family history.  The subsequent lessons will be implemented with field trips and students will use graphic organizers, google maps, and a choice board to design mapping activities.  At the conclusion of this project, students will showcase their portfolios in the Hearne High School library and invite parents, staff, and community members to tour the exhibit. The following tables will describe the details of the classroom activities.

Week 6

Complete portfolio to design a showcase in the Hearne High School library

Social Studies - students will learn about the history of Hearne from the past, present and the future.  They will be learning how historical events, political factors, change of use of the land, and climate impacted the current demographics and economies.

English - students will expand their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills by interviewing family, staff, and tour guides when they design family trees and collect artifacts on their field trips. They will also use Google maps to guide them on tours and create a map to memorialize their journeys. Students will use Canva family tree templates to design family tree maps.

Science - Students will study the climate patterns, ecology of bees, geological formations, natural resources, and agriculture.

Math - Students will learn about scale, distance, and direction. They will also use charts, diagrams, graphs, and technology to make calculations and plot data.

Transition planning - Students will research famous people born in Hearne and research STEM careers to design a transition map for their future employment for postsecondary independent living (see Figure 5).
