Rationale
Who doesn’t love a good mystery- drama, intrigue, a major whodunit moment that leaves everyone on the edge of their seat? Get the popcorn ready. The genre of mystery and crime can be seen all over television, in bookstores, movie theatres, documentaries and every single day in the news. From Law and Order, NCIS, CSI, Enola Holmes, the NY Times Best Seller List and hundreds of YA mystery and thriller novels available, the genre has something for everyone to enjoy. For me, I can’t help but think of this genre and my beautiful, yet spoiler alert mother at the same time. Does anyone else have that person in their life that seems to figure out all the crimes and suspects halfway through the movie and loves to tell you all about it?
In Pittsburgh 412 and Beyond: The Map Files, students will work together using maps and evidence to build a case against a suspect until the very end of the project. Using maps to build their case, students will engage in various activities including building their own map before turning their work into a text-dependent analysis. Using maps as part of this project gives students a real-world connection making the learning experience applicable to their own life.
