Teaching Strategies

In the spirit of Vygotsky teaching strategies in this unit will focus mainly on learning through social interaction. Learning happens best through language and communication from teacher to students but more importantly through peer-to-peer interaction. These interactions allow students to assist each other with decoding texts, creating meaning, formulating ideas, and more. Specific interactive teaching strategies that this unit will employ include partner reading, creating mind maps, think-pair-share activities, collaborative summarization, and more. While the unit may start with some direct instruction to learn context and important vocabulary, most learning will be done by peers interacting with the content, given just the right amount of scaffolding to position them for growth and success.

Students will be asked to produce a number of different types of materials in order to address the multiple learning styles in the classroom. Written responses, annotated timelines, informational posters, and text graffiti activities will provide a variety of experiences that will challenge most, if not all, learning styles. Some activities will be approached with a jigsaw framework so that groups of students can learn content and then have the opportunity to teach it to other students as well.
