Guide Entry to 26.02.07
The following curriculum unit intends to expose fourth and fifth grade students to Latin American history and culture, along with migratory patterns and storytelling. It includes discussion on a myriad of topics and is meant for students to explore content that has been untapped in the intermediate grade levels of not only my school building, but many others in the district. Migration stories from throughout the Americas (South America, Central America and North America) will be examined and discussed through several lessons followed by student led conversations and inquiry. In addition to historical patterns of migration, students will be immersed in cultural explorations with music as a focus. While the musical aspect of sharing stories of love, longing and struggle from home is a vast topic in and of itself, it will act as a bridge to connect the two areas of historic studies on the matter of migration and culturally expressive ways to share and advocate on that content as well. This curriculum unit is appropriate for the intermediate grade levels with adjustments made to remain developmentally appropriate with reading materials and excerpts.
(Developed for Reading, English/Grammar/Writing, grades 4-5, and Social Studies, grade 5; recommended for Reading, English/Writing/Grammar, and Social Studies, Intermediate grades 3-5)
