Vocabulary words that students will need to know are listed below with the definition.

A pre-reading or prior reading activity will stimulate the student's interest, along with identifying words relevant for discussion. Students will pronounce the words and display them on a word wall or in their notebooks. These words will become vital for the writing of the Space Magazine in the next section. Words can also be added if needed as research continues.

Words:

  1. orbit-movement of an object around another one
  2. rotate/rotation- turn/turning/to spin in a circle
  3. gravity- the attraction or pull of a mass object
  4. atmosphere-layer of gases around a planet
  5. astronomer- a person who studies space
  6. axis- imaginary line through planet from north to south pole
  7. crater- large depression or hole
  8. terrestrial- Earth like
  9. mantle-layer of rock under Earth's crust
  10. Solar System- the collection of planets, asteroids, comets and dust in space
  11. light-year- a measuring unit used by astronomer's for distances outside the Solar System. One light-year is the distance light travels in one year. (5.87 trillion miles)
  12. Milky Way- the galaxy we live in
