Tools for this Unit:

Appendix on Implementing District Standards

  • RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
  • Given that first graders are still learning how to read and comprehend text, including this standard in the unit will aid students in developing critical reading skills.

  • D2.Eco.15 Describe products that are produced abroad and sold domestically and products that are produced domestically and sold abroad.
  • In the past, this standard has been tricky to teach as whittling down the supply chain and explaining it to first graders requires a thoughtful approach with bite-sized information. By using bananas, and given that students are familiar with bananas, this nebulous idea of the banana supply chain becomes tangible to students.

  • W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
  • Learning how to write is a central component of first grade. Including this standard in the unit will provide an opportunity for students to get their thoughts on paper using factual text evidence that they have acquired throughout the unit.
