Back of the Yards College Preparatory School is a high school within the Chicago Public Schools district, and the school is located on the southwest side of Chicago. For the 2025-2026 school year, the school will serve 1,077 students in 9th through 12th grades, with 96% Hispanic students, and nearly 50% of the students are English learners.2 The median household income for the Back of the Yards Neighborhood was $31,951 in 2023.3 Many students at the school are multilingual and have some proficiency in both Spanish and English. Additionally, many students come from low-income, multigenerational households. Anecdotally, many students have reported chronic disease in one or more members within their household that could put them more at risk of infectious respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma, heart disease, and diabetes). The unit will be given to 11th-grade students in honors biology.
