Demographics
This unit will be created for sixth-grade students at Stanton Middle School in the Red Clay Consolidated School District in Wilmington, Delaware. According to the Delaware Report Card data, as of September 30, 2026, Stanton serves a culturally and linguistically diverse population of 496 students in grades 6 through 8. Hispanic or Latino students make up 53.02% of the student population, 21.77% are Black or African American and 20.77% are White. The remaining student population identifies as Multiracial, which is 2.82%, 1.41% are Asian American and 0.20% are American Indian or Alaska Native. English Learners (ELs) comprise approximately 35.08% of the student population, 25% receive special education services and 37.7% are classified as low-income earners.[2] More than half of the students in my classroom are Multilingual Learners (MLLs). This demographic represents a range of English language proficiency levels and educational experiences. It also significantly influences the design and the topic of this curriculum unit as it builds on their backgrounds, experiences and natural curiosity about their environment. Many students are simultaneously developing scientific understanding and academic English proficiency.
