Strategies

Notice and Wonder

The Notice and Wonder strategy engages students in mathematical or other discourse. Students look at a graph, image, or other learning material and share what they notice and what they wonder. The strategy has multiple entry points and is low risk, which fosters participation and confidence. The teacher can facilitate the conversation to build on what the students share.

Instructional Routines/ Slow Reveal Graphs

A Slow Reveal Graph is an instructional routine that gradually reveals parts of a graph to increase engagement. The graph uses slides with animation to bring in a new feature with each slide. Students analyze, interpret, and make predictions about the graph.

Think, Pair, Share

The Think, Pair, Share strategy is designed to enhance student engagement. Students think about a question individually, then they pair up to discuss it with a partner. The final step is for students to share their ideas with the larger group.

Reflective Journaling

Reflective journaling is a strategy where students reflect on their learning experiences to help deepen their understanding. Reflective journaling allows students time to think critically and get in touch with their feelings.

Hands-on/ Kinesthetic Learning

Students will engage with learning in an experiential way. Students explore, self-correct, and discover through trial-and-error.

Matching Responses and Justifying Answers

Given a set of cards, the students will match pairs and justify their answers to their peers. If the students disagree, they will engage in conversation sharing their views and listening to the views of others.
