Appendix Implementing District Standards

The standards listed below are Virginia Standards of Learning. This unit is cross curricular, but the primary focus is Virginia Studies. The unit will embed history and social science skills throughout the unit. The American Revolutionary War and the Civil War and Reconstruction are the main time periods and are addressed in VS5, VS6, VS7, and VS8.

Skills VS

The student will apply history and social science skills to the content by a. analyzing and interpreting information sources including, but not limited to artifacts, primary and secondary sources, charts, graphs, and diagrams; c. developing questions, enhancing curiosity, and engaging in critical thinking and analysis;

VS.5

The student will apply history and social science skills to explain Virginia and Virginians’ role during the American Revolution by

a. examining the important contributions, leadership, and experiences of Virginians during the war including, but not limited to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, James Madison, James Armistead Lafayette, Indigenous people, women, and free and enslaved Blacks;

d. identifying the importance of the American victory at Yorktown.

VS.6

The student will apply history and social science skills to explain the establishment and Growth of the new American nation with emphasis on the role of Virginians and events in Virginia during the 18th and 19th centuries by

a. describing how principles of these founding Virginia documents inspired the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of Virginia, the Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights;

The student will apply history and social science skills to understand the key people, events, and issues of the Civil War and Virginia’s role by

a. evaluating the experiences and contributions of Indigenous people and enslaved and free Blacks and their allies during the war including, but not limited to Elizabeth Van Lew and Mary Bowser.

VS.8

The student will apply history and social science skills to explain the reconstruction of Virginia following the Civil War by

b. examining the effects of Reconstruction on life in Virginia;

The math standards are about line graphs. The students will explore data from several pandemics to analyze, interpret, and discover trends.

4.PS.1

The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line graphs.

1) describe the characteristics of the data represented in a line graph and the data as a whole

3) make inferences about data represented in line graphs;

The science standard that aligns is the one about organisms. The students will explore a dichotomous key with virus descriptions which will require critical thinking.

The student will investigate and understand that organisms, including humans, interact with one another and with the nonliving components in the ecosystem. Key ideas include

d) classification can be used to identify organisms. Use a simple dichotomous key to classify organisms.
