Dr. King’s book Trumpet of Conscience suggests the historic role that the trumpet has had. This instrument has historically been used to announce important news and to call communities to unite. It also signaled the beginning of celebrations, and at times there were some, but seemingly short-lived. It’s my belief that it primarily serves as a warning and ultimately inspires courage in the oppressed. Through the figure of the trumpet, King believed people should hear the call to justice for all as written in the Constitution. I remember hearing the trumpet across a field being played at my father’s funeral for his military service. He was a Vietnam War veteran, and the trumpet helped us to focus on my father’s life and memory. By focusing on music, my students can learn the significant role it played in civil rights struggles.
