Theater
Viewing and creating plays was an important part of the civil rights movement. Theater helps students build reading comprehension and public speaking skills. Collaboration is also a critical component. The creative aspects also bring this art to life. Empathy is also an important lesson through theater arts. The confidence that comes from this allows them to move forward into life with focus, and they are more thoughtful. Within the Freedom Schools, students performed dramatic readings and historical reenactments. They also performed community plays, and I’m sure they were connected to the movement at that time. Role-playing activities about voting rights and civil rights were the most important part. This was preparation for the challenges to come.[19]
