A small book in flip-chart format provides 33 strategies for teacher's to use to improve students' content area reading. The color coding helps distinguish before, during, and after strategies. Great resource to utilize across the curriculum and in the English class for strategies to differentiate instruction, and to increase student understanding.
Haddon, Mark. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. n.d. Washington: Vintage, 2004. An endearing story of love and courage that chronicles the journey of an autistic boy who finds his neighbor's dog dead and decides it's up to him to solve this mystery. Although the boy does not show emotion and does not like to be touched…the ending is very touching!
Feathers, Karen. Infotext: Reading and Learning, Second Edition, Portsmouth: Pippin Publishing Group, 2004. A revised and expanded text of her 1993 edition, Feathers explains why infotexts—textbooks, manuals, magazines, websites, etc. often present problems, even for proficient readers. She provides very detailed information on how teacher's of content subjects can help students overcome these problems and learn more effectively. Great for high-school teachers.

Stockett, Kathryn. The Help. New York: Berkley Publishing Group, 2009. A contemporay view of a classic problem, race and racism during the antebellum South. A young white woman becomes interested in the plight of of African-American domestics and the "white" ladies they work for riright before the country explodes in a Civil Rights Revoloution. Some adult language so a parental advisory should be included before teaching in secondary classrooms.
Wilhelm, Jeffrey. Action Strategies for Deepening Comprehension. New York: Scholastic Professional Books, 2002. A fantastic resource to engage student's in learning to think critically about fiction and nonfiction texts. The strategies really engage students and create many authentic learning moments.
Williams, Yohuru. Teaching U.S. History Beyond the Textbook. Thousand Oaks: Corwin Press, 2009. An interesting text that turns learners into sleuths, spies, and researchers as they solve historical mysteries and prepare evidence and arguments for famous characters and cases.
Nichols, Maria. Talking About Text: Guiding Students to Increase Comprehension through Purposeful Talk. Huntingdon Beach: Shell Educational Publishing, 2009. Effective researched based strategies, model lessons, and supports are provided for K-8 teachers in this guide which defines purposeful talk, why it is important, and how it increases comprehension to help learners better understand text.
