Governor Markell and Climate Change

Governor Jack Markell has been the Democratic Governor of Delaware since 2009. Over the years, Markell has been working to reduce carbon emissions and prepare Delaware for climate change. On his blog he wrote, "Some of the highest ranking politicians in Washington have decided that they can dismiss discussion about climate change by simply saying they are not scientists, but governors do not have the luxury of pretending that climate change is not causing real damage." The Governor created the Climate Prosperity Strategy to clean up our environment and create jobs. In particular, the strategy focuses on improving energy efficiency of homes and businesses and producing marine energy. In 2013, Governor Markell signed Executive Order 41, "Preparing Delaware for Emerging Climate Impacts and Seizing Economic Opportunities from Reducing Emissions." He believes that responses to climate change and sea level rise should not be looked at as just protecting the environment; it is to protect Delaware residents and our economy. 40
